Bangladesh - Historic Mosque-city of Bagerhat

Located within the suburbs of Bagerhat, near the mouths of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers, this ancient city, formerly known as Khalifatabad, was founded by the Turkish general Ulugh Khan Jahan in the 15th century. The city's infrastructures attest to considerable technical skill, and an exceptional number of mosques and ancient Islamic monuments, many of them brick, can be seen there. UNESCO Stamps (1986)

Au coeur des faubourgs de Bagerhat, au confluent du Gange et du Brahmapoutre, la ville ancienne, autrefois appelee Khalifatabad, fut fondee au XVe siecle par le general turc Ulugh Khan Jahan. Cette cite, dont les infrastructures attestent une grande maitrise technique, regroupe un nombre exceptionnel de mosquees et de monuments anciens islamiques, dont beaucoup sont construits en brique. In der Mitte der Vorstadte von Bagerhat, am Zusammenfluss des Ganges und der Brahmaputra, wurde die ehemals Khalifatabad genannte Altstadt im 15ten Jahrhundert vom turkischen General Ulugh Khan Jahan begrundet. Die Stadt, deren Unterbau eine grosse technike Meisterschaft bestatigt, schliesst zahlreiche Moscheen und ehemalige islamische Bauwerke ein, unter denen viele aus Brick gebaut wurden.
