Latvia - Historic Centre of Riga

Riga was a major centre of the Hanseatic League and prospered from its trade with central and eastern Europe in the 13th-15th centuries. The urban fabric of its medieval centre reflects this prosperity, although most of its earlier buildings have been destroyed by fire and war. In the 19th century it became a very important economic centre, and the suburbs of the medieval town were built, first in imposing wooden buildings in classical style and then in Jugendstil. It is generally recognized that Riga contains the finest concentration of Art Nouveau buildings in Europe.

Riga etait un grand centre de la Ligue hanseatique qui a prospere grace au commerce avec l'Europe centrale et de l'Est aux XIIIe-XVe siecles. Le tissu urbain de son centre medieval reflete cette prosperite, bien que la plupart de ses batiments les plus anciens aient ete detruits par les incendies et la guerre. Au cours du XIXe siecle, elle est devenue un important centre economique et l'on a construit les faubourgs de la ville medievale, tout d'abord en imposant une architecture en bois de style classique, puis Jugendstil. De l'avis general, c'est a Riga que l'on trouve la plus belle concentration de batiments Art Nouveau d'Europe.

Riga war eine wichtige Stadt der Hansaliga, die vom 13ten bis zum 15 Jahrhundert dank dem Handel mit Ost- und Mitteleuropa gediehen ist. Das Stadtnetz ihres mittelalterlichen Zentrums zeigt diesen Wohlstand, obwohl die meisten alteren Gebaude von den Branden und vom Krieg zerstort worden sind. Im 19ten Jahrhundert ist sie ein wichtiges wirtschaftliches Zentrum geworden und die Vorstadte der mittelalterlichen Stadt sind wiederaufgebaut worden, zuerst beim Aufzwingen einer Architektur aus Holz klassischen Stils und dann Jugendstils. Gemass der allgemeinen Meinung befindet sich in Riga die schonste Konzentration Bauwerke im Neukunststil ganzen Europas.
