Perched on a rocky islet in the midst of vast sandflats exposed to powerful tides between Normandy and Brittany is the "Wonder of the West", a Gothic-style Benedictine Abbey dedicated to the archangel Saint Michael, and the village that grew up in the shadow of its great walls. Built between the 11th and 16th centuries, the abbey is an extraordinary technical and artistic tour de force, having to adapt to the problems posed by this unique natural site. "Die Wunder des Westens", eine zum Erzengel Michael geweihte Benediktenabteil gotischen Stils und das von Maueren geschutzte Dorf befinden sich an der Grenze zwischen der Normandie und der Bretagne auf einer kleineren felserigen Insel inmitten gewaltiger Strande, die dem Hin und Herkommen der Gezeiten unterworfen sind. Der Bau der Abteil, die zwischen den 11ten und 16ten Jahrhunderten errichtet wurde und sich an eine sehr schwierige Statte anpassen musste, ist eine technische sowie kunstleriche Glanzleistung gewesen.
