Jordan - Baptism Site "Bethany beyond the Jordan"

Situated on the eastern bank of the River Jordan, nine kilometres north of the Dead Sea, the archaeological site consists of two distinct areas: Tell Al-Kharrar, also known as Jabal Mar-Elias (Elijah's Hill) and the area of the churches of Saint John the Baptist near the river. Situated in a pristine natural environment the site is believed to be the location where Jesus of Nazareth was baptized by John the Baptist. It features Roman and Byzantine remains including churches and chapels, a monastery, caves that have been used by hermits and pools in which baptisms were celebrated, testifying to the religious character of the place. The site is a Christian place of pilgrimage.

Situe sur les rives orientales du Jourdain, a neuf kilometres au nord de la Mer morte, le site archeologique inclut deux zones archeologiques principales, Tell Al-Kharrar, egalement connue sous le nom de Jabal Mar Elias (la colline d'Elie), et la zone des eglises Saint-Jean-Baptiste pres du Jourdain. Ce lieu, au coeur d'une nature sauvage, est considere selon la tradition chretienne comme le site probable du bapteme de Jesus de Nazareth par Jean-Baptiste. Des vestiges d'origine romaine et byzantine, tels que des eglises et des chapelles, un monastere, des grottes ayant servi de refuges a des ermites et des bassins baptismaux, temoignent de la valeur religieuse du lieu. Le site est une destination de pelerinage pour les chretiens.

Situado en la orilla oriental del Jordan, a nueve kilometros al norte del Mar Muerto, este sitio arqueologico incluye dos zonas principales: el tell Al-Kharrar, tambien conocido por el nombre de Jabal Mar Elias (colina de Elias) y la zona de las iglesias de San Juan Bautista, cerca del rio Jordan. Segun la tradicion cristiana, en este lugar, situado en medio de una naturaleza salvaje, fue bautizado Jesus de Nazareth por Juan Bautista. Contiene vestigios de origen romano y bizantino, como iglesias, capillas, un monasterio y grutas que sirvieron de refugio a eremitas y pilas bautismales, dan testimonio de la vida religiosa del lugar, que es hoy destino de peregrinacion para los cristianos.

Auf den ostlichen Ufern des Flusses Jordan, neun Kilometer nordlich des Toten Meers umfasst die archaologische Statte zwei Hauptzonen, Tell Al-Kharrar, auch Jabal Mar Elias (die Hugel Elies) genannt, und die Zone der Kirchen Johannes der Taufer in der Nahe des Jordans. Dieser Ort inmitten wilder Natur ist gemass der christlichen Tradition als der Ort betrachtet, wo Jesus von Nazareth von Johannes wahrscheinlich getauft worden ist. Uberreste romischen und byzantinischen Ursprungs, beispielweise Kirchen und Kapellen, ein Kloster, von Einsiedlern als Unterstand benutzte Hohlen und Taufbecken beweisen den religiosen Wert dieses Orts. Die Statte ist immer noch heutzutage ein Wahlfahrtziel fur die Christen.
