Portugal - Central Zone of the Town of Angra do Heroismo in the Azores

Situated on one of the islands in the Azores archipelago, this was an obligatory port of call from the 15th century until the advent of the steamship in the 19th century. The 400-year-old San Sebastiao and San Joao Baptista fortifications are unique examples of military architecture. Damaged by an earthquake in 1980, Angra is now being restored.

Ravagee par un tremblement de terre en 1980, Angra est en cours de restauration.

Diese auf einer der Inseln des Archipels Azoren liegende Stadt war ein zwangslaufiger Hafen seit dem 15ten Jahrhundert und bis zur Erfindung der Dampfer im 19ten Jahrhundert. Ihre grossartigen Befestigungen von San Sebastian und San Juan Baptista, die etwa vor 400 Jahren gebaut wurden, sind ein ausserordentliches Beispiel militarischer Architektur. Die im Jahre 1980 von einem Erdbeben beschadigte Stadt Angra ist in Restaurierung.
