Spain - Monastery and Site of El Escorial

Built at the end of the 16th century on a plan in the form of a grill, the instrument of the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, the Escurial Monastery sits on an exceptionally beautiful site in Castile. The austere style of its architecture, a break with previous styles, had a considerable influence on Spain for more than half a century. It was the retreat of a mystic King and was, in the last years of Philippe II's reign, the centre of the greatest political power of the time.

Construit a la fin du XVIe siecle sur un plan reproduisant la forme d'un gril, instrument du martyre de saint Laurent, le monastere de l'Escurial s'eleve dans un site de Castille d'une exceptionnelle beaute. Rompant par sa sobriete avec le style qui prevalait alors, son architecture exerca une influence considerable en Espagne pendant pres d'un demi-siecle. Retraite d'un roi mystique, l'Escurial fut, pendant les dernieres annees du regne de Philippe II, le centre du plus grand pouvoir politique d'alors.

Retrato de un rey mistico, el Escorial fue durante los ultimos anos del reinado de Felipe II el centro del mayor poder politico de entonces.

El Escorial, der Rucktritt eines mystichen Konigs, ist das grosste politische Machtzentrum in der Welt am Ende des Reichs von Philip dem zweiten gewesen.
