Spain - Palmeral of Elche

The Palmeral of Elche, a landscape of groves of date palms, was formally laid out, with elaborate irrigation systems, at the time the Muslim city of Elche was erected, towards the end of the tenth century A.D., when much of the Iberian peninsula was Arab. The Palmeral is an oasis, a system for agrarian production in arid areas. It is also a unique example of Arab agricultural practices on the European continent. Cultivation of date palms in Elche is known at least since the Iberian times, dating around the fifth century B.C.

Le paysage des palmeraies d'Elche, avec ses systemes complexes d'irrigation, fut concu au VIIIe siecle apres J.-C., au moment ou une grande partie de la Peninsule iberique etait arabe. Il y a pourtant de bonnes raisons de penser que leur origine est bien plus ancienne, remontant aux implantations phenicienne et romaine dans la region. La palmeraie (palmeral) est un temoignage unique des pratiques agricoles arabes sur le continent europeen.

El paisaje de las palmeras de Elche, con sus complejos sistemas de riego, fue concebido en el siglo VIII despues de Cristo, cuando una gran parte de la Peninsula Iberica estaba ocupada por los arabes. Hay por tanto, buenas razones para pensar que sus origenes son mas antiguos, que se remontan al asentamiento de los fenicios y de los romanos en la region. El Palmeral es un testimonio unico de las practicas agricolas arabes en el continente europeo.

Die Landschaft der Palmenhaine von Elche mit ihren komplizierten Bewasserungsanlagen wurde im 8ten Jahrhundert nach Christus gefasst, als das grosste Teil der iberischen Halbinsel arabisch war. Doch kann gedacht werden, das ihr Ursprung viel alter ist und von den phonizianischen und romischen Kolonisierungen der Gegend datieren. Der Palmenhain (palmeral) ist ein unvergleichliches Zeugnis der arabischen landwirtschaftlichen Verfahren auf dem europaischen Kontinent.
